Origins: | Perhaps the oldest of the Old Style Cakes, the word Marzipan may derive from the Latin words "Massa" (itself from Greek Μ?ζα "Maza") meaning pastry and "Pan" meaning bread, or perhaps a variation of German or Old English marchpane or in Italian Marzapane meaning March Bread and is referenced in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliette (Act 1, Scene 5, Line 9). The earliest references for the delicacy itself harkens back to 3rd century Middle East and became widely popular in Europe in the 1100's. (Wikipedia) |
Marzipan is a confection consisting primarily of sugar or honey and almond meal, sometimes augmented with almond oil or extract. It is often made into sweets; common uses are chocolate-covered marzipan. |
